Mamavation Monday — Sept 27, 2010

I think this will be short this week, but you know how I am once I get talking!

I have been MIA because I was preparing for this, which took place yesterday in Brooklyn, NY. It was am amazing day that I will remember forever.

If you read the article, this picture is of me and the professor who I took the class with in 1996. Yes, I’m old.

In other news, I missed 2 workouts last week, but I feel ready for the biathlon. This week is tapering week, which means that you do some workouts, but nothing intense so your body can rest before the big day. I’m psyched to do it and then start training harder for the next 5K. I ran 4 miles on Saturday, which almost killed me. I am pretty sore. I’m thinking maybe I should have listened to my body more. Lesson learned.

This week’s workout schedule is tame compared to the past 3 weeks!

Monday – Off/PT exercises/yoga
Tuesday – Bike 40
Wednesday – Run 20/PT exercises
Thursday – Off
Friday – Bike 20 min very easy, walk for 10 min, easy run for 5 and walk 5 min
Saturday – Off/PT exercises
Sunday – Run 2 miles, Bike 12 miles, Run 2 miles — VICTORY!

That ain’t nothin’!

Mamavation News
As Comment Warrior I’m working with Leah and Lisa on some strategies to make it easier for everyone to get comments and give comments. Also the Mamavation campaign is accepting applications!! A little about the campaign:

Are you struggling with your weight? Would you like a supportive community to hold you up while you are learning healthy living? There IS a place where “digital moms” can go while online to find a sense of real community. It’s called Mamavation. (Check out the #mamavation hashtag on twitter.)

Mamavation is a healthy living sorority and 7-week bootcamp for two special moms, Mamavation Moms. The Mamavation Moms enter into a “reality TV” type experiment in social media. They are given fitness equipment, a professional nutritional & fitness plan, weekly coaching, and are supported by the Mamavation Sistahood for accountability. After 7 weeks of hard work, they have the tools they need to continue on, but always have a permanent home with the campaign.

Tonight on Mamavation TV, Pete Cohen will be sharing his nutrition program with us and 2 people will be winning the package!! I’ve checked this program out and it’s really interesting. He’s focused on eating good food, obviously, but not starving us to death like some other popular nutrition sites do. He tells us what we need, customized, including what herbs, veggies and vitamins we need to improve on. Very holistic. He’s a cool dude.

Well, I’m off to comment! Have a great week, ladies. Oh, a question, have you signed up for any events? Doing anything new activity-wise? I would love to hear about it! I know some of you signed up for 5Ks. Tell me again! I missed you all this week!

Congrats to our SOTW Joanna of  @way2gomom!

  1. I’m like SOOO super excited about everything you were able to do this weekend! That is like the COOLEST THING EVER! So much history in your family, and it makes it even MORE kick ass that it’s such a controversial history that you and your other relatives were just like”what ev” with! 🙂 That is sooo awesome! I would love to find out something like that in my fam and be like… “uh huh.. you know that’s right!”

Anyway, you’re excused for being MIA.. this time! 🙂

    Mwah!

    • gretablau says:

Ha ha. Thanks. I knew you’d understand! Yeah, my family is like yep! That’s right! It was such a fun and meaningful day. There should be another article too sometime this week and more pics. I’ll post so you can see!!

  2. Shannon says:

Wow! How awesome is that Greta!! I would love to be able to find something that awesome in my family! 🙂

Congrats on getting that 4 mile run in and being active! I can’t wait to hear about the new way to comment! I love commenting on everyone’s post but, at the same time have a hard time fitting it all in.

    • Greta says:

Thanks, Shannon! The new way to post isn’t going to change a ton, there will just be a little more incentive and you won’t be expected to post on 30 posts though you can if you want to. I’ll reveal as soon as Leah approves!!

  3. I am all for comment teams! 🙂

You are going to do awesome on your race! 🙂

  4. Shelley says:

you are doing amazing and I can’t wait to hear how it goes. As for Activities – My boys are participating in a MudQuest Adventure race on Saturday. Soon I’ll be saying the boys and I are participating in ________.

You are AWESOME! Thanks for all of your inspiration!

    • Greta says:

OOH mudquest sounds like fun! I used to love playing soccer in the rain and getting all muddy!! Can’t wait to hear what you’ll be doing together.

  5. bookieboo says:

Your relatives rock! How lucky are you! XXOO

I’m excited to get the comment peeps better organized. XXOO

  6. Can’t believe your biathlon is almost here! That means my 5k is right around the corner. I know they are two entirely different events, but the mental training is just as important for both. And I feel ya!

Can’t wait to see what the Comment Warrior has up her sleeve!! Have a great week!

    • Greta says:

Absolutely. I’m a little more nervous about the biathlon than I was about the 5K, but not much! It’s all about challenging ourselves. Scary sometimes. Can’t wait to cheer you on!!

  7. kia says:

Very cool, thank for posting the NPR link. You come from a beautiful heritage! And SHUT IT about being old LOL!! Have a great week, your bi is coming up. I am really excited for you.

As far as the comment thing I don’t know. Some people comment, some don’t. I almost seemed to appreciate the comments more prior to the blogging carnival. I still comment on almost all the posts every week (even though they may not be by Monday) and get a small fraction of comments compared to what I give. I am not bothered by that though. I don’t comment to get comments, but that is my personal opinion. I would rather have 2 sincere comments than a dozen fluff comments.

    • Greta says:

Thanks, Kia! So yeah, I have a lot more research to do. I’m hoping to find some relatives of a darker hue. Possibly check out the slavery ties of his relatives who stayed in the South. 3 of his aunts came to NYC at the same time as his mother, but those three went back and his mother stayed. Mixed blessing that she was the owner’s concubine or whatever you want to call it. The chosen one.

Anyway, I agree about the fluff comments 100% and what I’m going to do is going to focus on the quality of comments and not necessarily quantity.

  8. 4 miles! You’re my hero. I wish I could do that. Some day.

    • Greta says:

Seriously, I could barely do it, but it only took about 3 months to get there. It’s all about trusting the training. I’ll be doing that again when i start training for my next 5K and my ultimate time-lowering 5K next year! Come with me!

  9. Such an amazing and surreal experience. You must still be floating!

I hope your tapering week has been good and your body is resting for the race!

    • Greta says:

It really has been surreal since I discovered that he was my ancestor. Sunday was just amazing and kind of still sinking in. I hope that some day I can really really grasp it all. it’s been a spiritual experience to say the least, which is a lot coming from a “non-believer.”

I have rested maybe a little TOO much this week. Hoping to get one last short workout in today though.

  10. lorrie says:

yes iknow i am late with my comments this week has been busy with work good luck with your event and you’re doing an amazing job at training
